Learn to artfully remove those delicate items that have become characteristic of classic Burlesque routines!
Nobody knows burlesque like Jo Weldon. She first stripped on stage in 1978, a tad underage at the Rocky Horror Picture Show, flinging her boa about with a passion that persists to this day.
She mounted the stage professionally as soon as she was of age, and over time she advanced to the level of feature dancer, booked to headline at strip joints across the continent, always keeping the ladies of burlesque in mind as she created her elaborately costumed and themed acts. She has been studying the art of striptease for over two decades.

The Academy of Burlesque and The Swedish Housewife Present
(the first ever...) Seattle Burlesque Lecture Series 2007
"Pleasure, Pain, and the Homovestite" by Jennifer Nace, The Naughty Librarian:
Jennifer Nace has performed burlesque for years as The Naughty Librarian (and other 'Gal Fridays'), worked at various red-light establishments, and has a bachelor's degree in Modern Dance and a Master's of Library Science. She will delve into the subjects of race, body image, and sexuality as they relate to burlesque performance, and will discuss how burlesque is currently placed within a feminist aesthetic and interpreted differently because of its temporal and visceral qualities. "Pleasure, Pain, and the Homovestite" is an amalgamation of her thoughts on political voyeurism, black/whiteface, audience as canvas, dysmorphia, performance as a sexual act. She will be using examples from popular culture, focusing on how our ideas of what it is ok to perform are shaped by the cultural landscape.
"Exotic Dance in Contemporary Film" by Professor Jo "Boobs" Weldon:
Jo Boobs has over 20 years of striptease and exotic dance experience. As an educator she has lectured about burlesque and stripping at NYU, The New School, the American Philosophical Association Pacific Division Conference, and other academic venues, has lobbied at the UN, and has published dozens of articles, essays, and poems on the subjects of performative gender and sexual identity.
Rather than being a historical overview of the subject, her talk is an analysis of the techniques some filmmakers have used to present exotic dance, how it is presented differently in commercial films than in burlesque or stag reels, and what exotic dance can mean within a plot or characterization. The film clips include footage of Elvira, Diane Lane, Salma Hayek, and Christopher Walken.
Academic Lecture fee qualifies you for reduced admission on THIS IS BURLESQUE 7 Show that immediately follows the lectures.

IT BEGINS
The Sex Workers' Art Show Tour is coming to your town! The show is an eye-popping evening of visual and performance art created by people who work in the sex industry to dispel the myth that they are anything short of artists, innovators, and geniuses!
The wildly successful cabaret-style show is hitting the road again, bringing audiences a blend of spoken word, music, drag, burlesque, and multimedia performance art. Intelligent and hot, disturbing and hilarious, the performances offer a wide range of perspectives on sex work, from celebration of prostitutes' rights and sex-positivity to views from the darker sides of the industry.
This year's incredible lineup of performers includes international burlesque sensation Miss Dirty Martini; award-winning author of How I Learned to Snap Kirk Read; acclaimed Whitney Biennial artist Julie Atlas Muz; author of Happy Baby and My Girlfriend Comes to the City and Beats Me Up Stephen Elliott; stripper historian and burlesque professor Jo Weldon; member of the internationally renowned Japanese performance collective Dumb Type, Cono Snatch Zubobinskaya; enigmatic operatic musician Reginald Lamar; feminist smut purveyor and queer film star Amber Dawn; filmmaker and performer Bridget Irish; and tour founder and ringmaster Annie Oakley.
The show includes people from all areas of the sex industry: strippers, prostitutes, dommes, film stars, phone sex operators, internet models, etc. It smashes traditional stereotypes and moves beyond "positive" and "negative" into a fuller articulation of the complicated ways sex workers experience their jobs and their lives. The Sex Workers' Art Show entertains, arouses, and amazes while simultaneously offering scathing and insightful commentary on notions of class, race, gender, labor and sexuality!
